To that end, Wright designed the building as a hybrid of Japanese and Western architecture. The Imperial Hotel was demolished in 1968. The entrance lobby was saved and reconstructed at the Meiji Mura architecture museum in Nagoya. Work began on the hotel in 1916, and Wright spent much of the next six years in Japan.

Harrah's Entertainment (later known as Caesars Entertainment) purchased the Imperial Palace in 2005, forR$370 million. The company considered partial or complete demolition of the resort, before deciding on a renovation instead. On December 21, 2012, Caesars renamed the resort as The Quad.
